Barry Beyerstein Memorial Fund
Dr. Barry Beyerstein was a scholar, an activist, a dedicated teacher, and a devoted family man. He enhanced SFU’s reputation as a university with a difference while building a career that capitalized on his passionate investigation of the psychology of anomalous experience. From the psychology of human error to his penchant for debunking scientifically questionable claims, he was internationally recognized and sought after by the media because of his wit, easy manner, and unique understanding of the human brain and behavior. A tireless proponent of harm reduction in drug policy, Dr. Beyerstein helped found the Drug Policy Foundation and the Canadian Foundation for Drug Policy and championed Vancouver’s needle exchange program. He served as the Chair of SFU's Sterling Prize for Controversy, was a Fellow of CSICOP (now CSI), lead the BC Skeptics (an educational organization dedicated to improving scientific literacy and providing critiques of occult and pseudoscientific claims), and served as the Associate Editor of the Scientific Review of Alternative Medicine.
To honour Barry’s giving spirit, the Barry Beyerstein Memorial Fund provides financial support for students in any faculty at Simon Fraser University. You may also mail your donation along with this filled in form.
Lorne M. Kendall
Memorial Scholarship in Psychology
This scholarship was
established as a memorial to Dr. Lorne M. Kendall, who was the founding
head of the Psychology Department at Simon Fraser University. The award
was provided in recognition of the significant contributions Dr. Kendall
made to the measurement of behaviour in applied settings. Varying in amount
each year, this scholarhip is awarded in spring semester to the undergraduate
or graduate psychology student who, in the previous year, has best exemplified
Dr. Kendall's approach to psychology.
Marilyn Bowman
Graduate Endowment Fund
The Marilyn Bowman Graduate
Endowment Fund was established by faculty, staff, and retirees of the
Psychology Department in 2006. In addition to the research and teaching
associated with a regular faculty position, Professor Bowman provided
lengthy periods of service to the Department and the University in a wide
range of administrative appointments and roles. She created the Doctoral
Program in Clinical Psychology and played a key role in gaining accreditation
as a scientist-practitioner program with both the Canadian and American
Psychological Associations. Valued at a minimum of $1,000, the MBGEF is
awarded annually in the spring, providing financial support to a graduate
student who has demonstrated academic excellence in our Clinical MA Program
and is also enrolled in our Ph.D Clinical Program.
Mary Batchelor
Memorial Endowment Fund
Established in memory by
her many colleagues, friends and family members, Mary Batchelor was an
employee of Simon Fraser University for 16 years. She was the Departmental
Assistant in Psychology for a number of years and was an elected member
of the Board of Governors. This Endowment Fund supports the annual Mary
Batchelor Memorial Scholarship and several Mary Batchelor Memorial Staff
Awards. A Mary Batchelor Memorial Scholarship of approximately $1,250
is awarded annually in the spring semester to a student in the Psychology
major or honours program. Mary Batchelor Memorial Staff Award(s) are made
annually from an amount equal to 1/4 of accrued interest to SFU staff
members currently pursuing studies part-time at SFU.
Psychology Alumni
Endowment Fund
The Psychology Alumni
Endowment Fund supports the Psychology Honors Prize in the amount of $500.
The SFU Psychology Alumni Endowment Fund committee meets annually to determine
the awards to be made. The Psychology Honours Prize is made annually to
students enrolled in Psychology 490/499. The award is based on the quality
of research conducted for the Honours Project. The recipient gives a talk
on his/her research at the Psychology Department's annual convention.
